david walters, director coda music trust and music research institute, christchurch, and also the pioneers in the nordoff-robbins movement in london. an inaugural music therapy conference was convened in bude late in 2000, and the first locally-based music therapist was in place by september 2003. judyth knew what she wanted, initially a music therapy centre, and worked very hard to find funding to pay for it. the brief included music generally, as well as therapy, and judyth laid on several festivals of music in bude. she ran an events publication, on the record for music and musical events within a 50-mile radius of bude, for several years. she also established an instrument loan scheme for local school children, and commenced a series of highly successful musical workshops in schools. fund-raising was relentless, but did not yield major capital sums to build a centre, and the emphasis switched to fund-raising for music therapists to work in a wide range of local schools in north devon as well as north cornwall. judyth did not start sound waves south west until she was a grandmother several times over, and has shown a remarkable example of resourcefulness and determination in bringing music therapy to the south west. she had been at school in bude and married into the family of the vicar of morwenstow, reverend robert stephen hawker. she took her young family to east africa to live and work in the 1950s, at the very end of the empire, returning to bude in the 1960s, a working mother who enjoyed needlework. she established an antique lace and linen business, eventually publishing “basic principles for the cleaning of lace and linen” in 1991, followed by “the illustrated dictionary of lace” in 1997 which was highly regarded. in 2005, judyth was awarded the beacon fellowship, 'highly commended' in recognition of her outstanding contribution to charitable and social causes. she was highly commended in the category of community builder. this all illustrates her remarkable enthusiasm and commitment, as she brought music and communication to thousands of children every year. we all salute her achievements. rowly pillman
